The “Donor Walk” was a moving tribute in which Whaley’s coworkers came together to honor him and his selfless gift-giving.
The deep reverence and admiration demonstrated his steadfast commitment to safeguarding and serving the community. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office has lost a pillar since 1997, Sgt. Whaley, when he had a stroke and tragically passed away from complications at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Whaley was a loyal and trustworthy colleague who was accessible at all hours of the day and night, and Sheriff Michael Hodges remembered him with affection.
Many in the department have rallied to support Sgt. Whaley’s grieving family, which has had a profound impact on the department as a whole. One Chick-fil-A in the area has a touching sign that reads, “Pray For Hambone.” Whaley’s grandmother gave him the affectionate moniker. The Sheriff’s Office started selling t-shirts and sweatshirts to help Whaley’s family, and they’ve raised more than $3,000 so far.
